about

this song covers my lame attempts at being a good friend to people with depression or mental illness. i've had many people in my life over the years who i've cared about deeply but i've always felt ill-equipped at helping them through their hardest times, specifically in times of depression or bouts of mental illness. i've always felt i never said the right thing or wasn't doing enough and didn't know how to find out what it was i should be doing. so turning my seemingly shallow attempts at helping friends into a catchy pop song with vague lyrics, seemed to encapsulate my eye-roll deserving behavior in these situations. always loyal but completely inept.

lyrics

It was late in May or maybe it was June/Laying in the grass, the sky a light maroon/And I was in charge of everything you told me I should be/Exercising, philosophizing, sober for three weeks/Then you went inside/It was too long a time/Oh dear Louis I was in the yard/Oh dear Louis I wasn’t too far to hear you cry/We were at a party by Palmer Square/And I was sick of hearing ‘bout this guy’s band/So I went to the porch to breathe in all that isotopic air/Maybe you lost track of time or maybe you just got too scared/You locked yourself in a room/The panic consumed/Oh dear Louis I was just outside/Oh dear Louis I wasn’t too far to hear you cry/Oh dear Louis I’m always on the line/Oh dear Louis I wasn’t too far to hear you/Oh dear Louis you’re always on my mind/Oh dear Louis I’m not too far to hear you cry
